В рецензии на книгу Джона Грегсона, посвященную раннему этапу формирования моральной философии Аласдера Макинтайра - одного из самых выдающихся мыслителей и моралистов нашего времени, не только исследуются специфические аспекты авторского анализа, но и предпринимается попытка выявить особенности интерпретации этической и политико-философской мысли второй половины ХХ в., характерные для современной британской и европейской традиции социального анализа. Последовательно обсуждаются мотивы и события, связанные с приобщением Макинтайра к марксистской традиции и «новым левым», причины и сам процесс разрыва философа с современным марксизмом и коммунистической политикой. По мнению рецензента, британскому ученому вполне удалось ответить на важный вопрос: с какой целью сегодня необходимо исследовать именно ранний период творчества Макинтайра, который сам философ в более поздний период характеризует предельно критически? Не менее существенным аспектом рецензируемой книги представляется анализ проблемы генезиса философской и этической концепции Маркса и ее глубокой связи с этикой Аристотеля и интерпретациями древнегреческой этической традиции в философии Средних веков (Фома Аквинский) и эпохи европейского модерна (Гегель, Фейербах).
