The paper is the first to present a review of the scientific literature and the development of research on state identity politics. The prerequisites for studying the role of the state in the identity construction are identified. The influence of government authorities, in particular through grant programs, on stimulating the development of a new area of research is characterized. The range of methodological approaches that domestic researchers are guided by is considered. A variety of approaches to determining the content and objectives of state identity policy has been revealed. Constructivism is currently the dominant approach in domestic studies of state identity policy. The deepest disagreements among scholars exist on the issue of the scope and components of state identity policy. An analysis of scientists' vision of the shortcomings and prospects for improving the activities of the state in identity constructing was carried out. Russian researchers pay increased attention to the need to develop an institutional basis for the state identity policy. Based on the review, the article presents conclusions about the specifics, contradictions and likely trends in further scientific study of state identity policy in Russia. A specific feature of the development of the new research field is the obvious lack of empirical and field work. Most scientific publications are project-based and reflect the authors’ vision of the state’s tasks, not supported by scientific special methods.
